| Honeywell, Matsushita Avionics Systems Corporation To Test Inflight Information System With Singapore Airlines In-Service Evaluation Will Test Variety of Cabin Applications Including E-Mail |
| September 19, 2000 |
WAEA, Anaheim, California, USA – Honeywell [NYSE: HON] and Matsushita Avionics Systems Corporation (MAS) have been selected by Singapore Airlines to conduct an In-Service Evaluation (ISE) of the Honeywell Total Aircraft Information System (TAIS). The announcement was made this week at the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) show.
Primary applications include Honeywell’s Inflightmailsm e-mail service, credit card verification and terminal area wireless network (Gatelink). The service will be integrated with Matsushita’s System 2000E In-Flight Entertainment system. Follow-on applications are also being considered for implementation upon completion of the initial two-month trial. These follow-on applications include Intranet, point-of-sale (POS), e-commerce, e-books and several others. The evaluation is scheduled to begin in December onboard a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400.
"Honeywell’s Inflightmail e-mail service, credit card verification/authorization, e-books and Gatelink (wireless communication with the airplane on the ground) have already been certified by the FAA on corporate aircraft," said John Uczekaj, Vice President and General Manager responsible for Honeywell’s Aviation Information Systems business.
"The Singapore Airlines installation will be one of the first FAA certifications of an airborne e-mail service for airline passengers," Uczekaj said.
MAS and Honeywell are also cooperating on a development effort to host e-mail solutions for airline passengers using Honeywell’s Inflightmail service and Matsushita’s seat-back IFE display.
"This is a very exciting opportunity for both Honeywell and MAS and a natural extension of our core capabilities," said Takashi Mizuma, President, Matsushita Avionics Systems Corporation. "Our strategic relationship blends the existing skills, expertise and products of two very experienced companies, allowing us to provide what we believe is the best solution in the industry for airline customers, " Mizuma said.
"This program continues a tradition of innovations between Honeywell and Singapore Airlines," Uczekaj added. "The airline was a launch customer for multi-channel satellite communications and we’re delighted to have such a strong team working on this latest industry advancement." |
