New system to offer laptop, seatback connectivity along with a full range of entertainment options

Seattle (26 September 2002)  - Matsushita Avionics Systems Corporation (MAS) has been selected by South African Airways (SAA) to provide the In-Flight Entertainment system for the airline’s 6 new Airbus A340-300 aircraft.  Scheduled for delivery beginning in February 2004, SAA’s A340-300 fleet will be equipped with MAS’ newest IFE offering, System 3000i.

System 3000i (the "i" stands for Internet) is an enhancement to MAS’ flagship product, System 3000.  S3000i provides an upgrade path for passenger laptop connectivity, utilizing Ethernet, and also offers broadband provisioning so that airlines can offer their passengers broadband connectivity whenever they are positioned to do so.

In addition, System 3000i will be capable of providing passengers with up to 580Gb of entertainment content, including a selection of up to 250 movies (a different movie title for almost every passenger onboard the 295-seat A340-300), up to 1000 hours of music entertainment, computer games, in-flight information and much more.  Since the system is fully interactive, passengers will be able to start, stop, pause and resume their entertainment whenever they wish.

System 3000i`s full range of connectivity and entertainment options can be expanded even further by MASMedia™, the content arm of MAS.  MASMedia offers airlines hundreds of pages of multimedia content from leading online destinations; an impressive array of new-generation games including multiplayer interactive games; iXplor™, a moving map application that lets passengers track their flight and explore their world from their seat; live text news that is refreshed hourly; Inflight Communicator software with seat-back email and SMS mobile text messaging capabilities; and many other content options.SAA has also selected System 3000 as the inflight entertainment system for its recently-announced purchase of 9 A340-600s.
